Behavioral mock interviews, 1:1 with an experienced mentor

Practise behavioral interview answers out loud with an experienced mentor, and find out which of your stories hold up once someone asks follow-up questions.

Before you book a behavioral interview mentor

How do I choose the right behavioral interview mentor?

Most behavioral answers fail on the follow-up, not the first telling. A rehearsed STAR story sounds fine until the interviewer asks what you personally decided, what you would do differently, or what the other person would say about it. Practising against someone who keeps asking is the only way to find the weak ones.

What should I bring to a behavioral interview mentor session?

Bring six to eight real situations rather than a script: a conflict, a failure, a decision made with incomplete information, a time you changed someone's mind. A mentor can help you map them to the questions you are likely to get, so one story is never stretched to cover everything.

Say "I" more than feels natural. Interviewers are grading your contribution, and an answer built around what "we" did leaves them nothing to score.

What a behavioral interview tests

A behavioral interview asks about things you have actually done, on the theory that past decisions predict future ones. Interviewers are listening for your own contribution, your judgement when things went wrong, and whether you learned anything from it.

How a behavioral mock interview works

1. Bring six to eight real situations

A conflict, a failure, a decision made with incomplete information, a time you changed someone's mind.

2. Answer out loud, then take the follow-ups

Ask the mentor to keep asking what you personally did, until your answer runs out. That is where the real interview is decided.

3. Find the weak stories

Ask which stories to drop, which to sharpen, and which questions you still have no good answer for.

Common behavioral questions to practise

Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager

Listening for how you raised it, and what you did once the decision went the other way.

Tell me about a time you failed

Listening for a real failure, what you changed afterwards, and no blaming others.

Tell me about a time you influenced without authority

Listening for how you brought people along when you could not tell them what to do.

Tell me about a decision you made with incomplete information

Listening for how you judged the risk, and how you would have known if you were wrong.

Behavioral interview questions

What is the STAR method?

It is a way to structure an answer: the Situation, your Task, the Action you took and the Result. It helps you stay organised, but it will not save a story that has no real decision in it.

How many stories should I prepare?

Six to eight real situations is a good start, so that one story is never stretched to cover every question. Know each one well enough to take follow-ups without losing the thread.

Can I practise behavioral interviews with AI?

Yes. AI practice is useful for repetition and getting used to answering aloud. A mentor who has made hiring decisions can tell you how your stories would actually land.
